Steve Peat
Style: Downhill Racer
Hometown: Sheffield, UK
"Mountain biking is my job, and everyone needs a little release after their day at work. But when the pints are done being lifted, there's still a job to do."
2006 was a year of great reward for Steve Peat. He captured the UCI Downhill World Cup, by riding consistently and keeping his wits about him, for the third time, and once again comes into a new season as the reigning World Cup champion.
For Peat, who has been racing since 1992, life consists of family and bikes. He splits his time between the two, leaving behind his wife Adele and son Jake for as much as 5 months of the year to follow the races. "I live on an old farm, four or five miles outside of Sheffield. I love being at home, playing with Jake (my son). Outside of my family, mountain biking is pretty much my life," he states. "I still love all the travel, but it gets harder when I have to pack my bags and leave my wife and Jake at home."
When asked how much longer he plans to compete, Peaty smiles calmly and says: "As long as it takes. People ask that a lot. Right now, I enjoy racing, I enjoy riding, I'm having fun, and I don't see any end to that in the near future..."
